What are the tasks of a machine learning engineer? And what skills do you need in a band as well as in a startup? Learn more about Andreas here.

Geospin:
Where are you from?

Andreas: I grew up in Stuttgart East, not far from Daimler.

Geospin: How did you come to Freiburg?

Andreas: After studying engineering in Stuttgart, I moved to Freiburg to complete my PhD.

Geospin: How did you come to Geospin?

Andreas: I came to Geospin because I was looking for startups that were developing new products in the field of AI and machine learning.

Geospin: What did you study?

Andreas: I originally studied mechanical engineering and then came to AI and specifically machine learning through my scientific work at the Chair of Robotics. In my doctoral thesis, I specialized in AI-based object recognition using image data to be able to grasp objects with a robot.

Geospin: What exactly is your job at Geospin?

Andreas: I am currently developing the AI forecast for the electric charging stations. In particular, I am working on automating the training of these models. This way, the customer always gets our latest insights and we can ensure that the quality of the models stays high or even gets better with each update. I am also working on our algorithm that processes geographic feature data from different data sources so that our AI models can use this georeferenced information for their forecast.

Geospin: What do you like about working at Geospin?

Andreas: We are a very agile team with flat hierarchies and we are open to new ideas. As a result, it is often not far from the first idea to the product, and that makes the work very interesting.

Geospin: And how is working in the pandemic for you?

Andreas: I like the newfound flexibility. In the long term, I can well imagine a mixture of home office and office.

Geospin: What is important for you in a workplace?

Andreas: Working together is important. You can achieve a lot together if you support each other and have clear goals. I'm also happy about creative freedom and time flexibility.

Geospin: What do you do after work and in your leisure time?

Andreas: In my leisure time I like to make music. I sing and play electric guitar in a band here in Freiburg.

Geospin: Can you bring qualities from your hobby into your work?

Andreas: As a musician in a band and in a startup, you need a lot of creativity and a lot of team spirit.

Thank you, Andreas!
